great read love the old pubs
do you know pub that was on 54 Holborn Viaduct had entrance on Farringdon Road and up at top of viaduct stairs . in 1980s was known as Terry Neils or Knights ..be great to know as I worked in Charterhouse St 1975 Till 2008
The last incarnation was Terry Neills Sports Bar – an affable licensee and a retired footballer, and had several names before then. He was sacked by Arsenal in 1983 and retired from the game at the age of 41, and then opened up several sports bars in Hendon and of course his eponymous bar on Holborn Viaduct. He had been Arsenal player-manager and appears/ed on Arsenal TV where he commentates on games.
A friend used to work for Oftel in Atlantic House adjacent to the bar in the 1980s and early ’90s, and this was his retreat for either entertaining visitors or to watch cricket, rugby etc., when it got too much in the office. He’d discretely amble out the back door and then back up to the bar, and I’d join him from BT’s head office along Newgate Street from time to time. He had his leaving do there as well. https://whatpub.com/pubs/ELC/14626/terry-neills-sports-bar-london
